GREEN INITIATIVES

Green Initiatives for Latitude Festival 2007

At Latitude we aim to reduce the environmental impact of the festival and offer you ways of enjoying yourself while also doing your part to reduce your impact. Following are sustainability initiatives we have implemented, things you can participate in, and tips for green campers.

Travelling to the Festival
We have made every effort to encourage festival goers to consider using public transport and car share options in travelling to the festival. Filling every seat in your car, joining the Lift Share program, or catching a bus or train…are all great ways to reduce your carbon footprint when travelling to the festival.

• Comprehensive shuttle bus services to and from local train stations are available, enabling easy travel by train and bus to the festival. There is also coach travel direct from London. See Travel page for details.
• Lift share is another great way of getting to the festival while reducing your carbon footprint. If you have a spare seat to the festival or need one, log on to Latitude’s Car Sharing Scheme to find or offer a lift.
• Those that come to the festival for just one day can also take advantage of public transport and stay overnight onsite. We have created a day ticket holder campsite to ensure that people can still use public transport to return home despite the lack of late night services from the area.
• Of course, we encourage cycling to the festival. Racks are available onsite for safe bike storage.

Recycling, Composting & Waste

Our goal is to minimize the amount of waste going to landfill and to maximize recycling and composting. We do this by:

• Separating recyclables and compostables from general waste which will go to landfill.
• All food packaging, including plates, bowls, cups, containers and cutlery are biodegradable. Please place ALL food packaging items and left over food, into the compost bins.
• Staffed waste stations to help festival goers with recycling and composting separation.
• Wandering staff onsite pick up recyclable waste.
• Camper’s Waste Kits will be supplied so you can separate your waste at your tent during the festival and then bring it conveniently to the waste stations.
• A waste audit will be carried out to measure volumes recycled, composted and going to landfill.

Reusable Beer Cups
This year Latitude Festival and Workers Beer Company are introducing an innovative way of drastically reducing our waste by having reusable beer cups. You’ll need to pay a £2 deposit, which you’ll get back when you return your cup to the bar. It’s a great way of reducing the amount of rubbish generated at the festival. The cups will be washed and reused, and have a life of up to 100 washes. If you want to keep your cup as a souvenir, that’s not a problem!

Market traders
All market traders adhere to strict packaging, recycling and composting protocols for the festival. These include:

• All food stalls must use fully compostable food packaging.
• Composting and recyclable waste generated by stalls is placed in appropriate bins
• Plastic bags discouraged.
• Cardboard collection service.
• Waste oil collection, with oil put into the recycled vegetable oil process to be converted to biofuel.
• We encourage stall holders to use low energy light bulbs.
• We encourage stall holders to use of chemical free cleaning products.
• We encourage stall holders to use fair trade and organic products.

Leave it as you found it – use Ecover Shower GelTo help minimize the environmental impact on the land at Henham Park where Latitude is held, Ecover Shower Gel is available for all festival goers to use in the onsite showers. Ecover Shower Gel is made from plant and mineral based ingredients and is biodegradable, leaving no harmful residues on the land or in the water after use. Please use the Shower Gel provided by Ecover if you have not brought your own ecological version.

HANDY TIPS FOR GREEN CAMPERS

Following are tips for you include:
• Say no to plastic bags if offered by market vendors. Bring your own re-useable cloth bag.
• Minimize the amount of over-packaged goods and individual portion packs you bring to the festival.
• Buy fair-trade and organic food, drinks and products at stalls if possible.
• Don't drop your litter. Use the waste stations all over the site!
• Please please please don’t drop your cigarette butts. Every butt you throw on the ground has to be picked up by someone else. Use an empty film canister to collect your butts.
• Litter pickers are lovely…smile at them and please help them out by not throwing rubbish on the ground!
• Separate your waste at your campsite and use the bags we supply to bring your recycling and compostables to the appropriate bins.
• Use public transport and our shuttle bus service if possible, or look for a lift through Lift Share. (link)
• If you must use your car, then please consider a Lift Share (link) scheme. Making sure your tyres are properly inflated will mean that your car will run more efficiently and will reduce your carbon emissions. If you are in a queue to enter the site, please turn off your engine rather than idling the car.
• Use only phosphate free shampoo and soap in the showers and remember to take a short shower!
• Turn off taps & showers when finished.
• Live by the 'LEAVE NO TRACE' philosophy – take only photos, leave only footprints.
